Getting home insurance if you have a criminal conviction
Getting home insurance if you have a criminal conviction
Since April 2013 you no longer need to disclose your spent convictions. The only information that you need to provide is any unspent convictions for yourself or anyone registered living at your property. This was in conjunction with a new law that regulates all spent convictions as finished, meaning that they cannot count against you.
What counts as an unspent criminal conviction?
An unspent criminal conviction is any conviction however minor that has not been spent. The spent time can vary depending on offense but this can be a set period after jailed or fine time. Once this period has finished you do not need to disclose any of this information at all, That’s the law according to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
A unspent criminal conviction will have a certain time frame until you are classed as a rehabilitated offender with a new clean record and no convictions against your name that you are still spending. This can be accessed by yourself by the court, police or any documentation that you received after being convicted.
You may be asked when applying for insurance for any convictions that are still being spent
These convictions are assessed statistically with a specific algorithm to accurately produce a insurance quote. The type of offense will differ the quote with the amount of convictions eventually increasing the quotation. You must answer any questions asked but you are not forced to give any information that was not asked unless otherwise stated in the terms of conditions of the home insurance quotation.
Simple cautions, final warnings or reprimands are spent immediately
Warnings, cautions or reprimands are classed as spent immediately on receipt and will not increase your insurance premiums and will not be asked when asking for a quotation.
