‘Storms’ Defined by Home Insurance
A Storm is defined by a period of extreme weather
A storm is more than rain or a strong wind and will be specified within your terms and conditions under your home insurance. A storm could be a combination of rain, hail, snow, lightning or heavy wind that can affect/damage an area. The storms lifespan can vary and does not affect the definition. A period of weather that includes the aforementioned but is not expected to cause damage to a well maintained property will not be classed as a storm.
The factors that are considered
Insurers will take account a number of factors of the storm to see where the damage occurred and whether or not it could have been prevented. An example of this is damage to a window during a high period of winds, this could be caused by the storm however if the window broke because of loose debris/loose window fittings then it’s a case of not maintaining your property; not damage caused by the storm.
The insurers will however identify the wind speed and power during the time of the damage and decide whether or not these things could not have been prevented and it was purely the strength of the storm that caused the damage.
Breakage and damage during the storm vs wear and tear
Home insurance policies will not cover any damage that was caused by not maintaining a property or any damage that was caused by such. If unsure, insurers cover damage that is caused by sudden and unexpected events which could not have been prevented within reason. Wear and tear is expected within properties but it is also within the expectation to be repaired by the owner for general maintenance. Home insurance is not a substitute for proper maintenance.
Rebuilding or repairing your home after a storm
Most insurance is designed to give you back exactly what you have lost during the sudden and unexpected event. The insurer will pay the costs for your home to be rebuilt to your specification, within reason, and you may be able to add extras such as flood defences if the cost is included within your original rebuild quotation. If the extra build is outside of the original costs, you will be expected to pay for this yourself. You may also be able to hire your own builder however the management of the build and any issues that arise from this must be settled by yourself and your builder.
